This approach allows Registered Training Organizations (RTOs) to assess an individual’s existing skills and knowledge in a practical, non-formal, or formal learning setting, to determine whether they meet the required competencies associated with the relevant Australian standards.
For instance, someone who has worked for years as a Personal Assistant (PA) in an office environment will have acquired many skills that are a part of a Business Administration qualification. Similarly, an individual who has worked in a garage may have gained relevant competencies for a Mechanics qualification. Although prior work, voluntary, and learning experiences may not be sufficient to provide a full RPL qualification, the competencies an individual has acquired can be used as credits towards the required units of competency, thus reducing the number of modules or time required to complete a qualification.
