What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process that assesses an individual’s previous learning and experience, regardless of where or how it was acquired, to determine if it is equivalent to the learning outcomes of a particular qualification or course.

Through the RPL process, an individual can demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and competencies that they have gained through formal or informal education, training, work experience, volunteering, or other life experiences, and have them recognized towards a qualification or unit of competency.

RPL is commonly used in vocational education and training (VET) in Australia, but it is also recognized in other countries. It is designed to provide individuals with an opportunity to obtain a qualification or a part of it without having to undertake the entire course, saving time and money.

The RPL Process

The Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) approach is based on the principle that candidates may have gained relevant knowledge, skills, and understanding from their past work experiences, whether paid or unpaid, both within Australia and abroad. RPL also considers any competencies an individual may have developed as a result of previous learning experiences. This approach allows Registered Training Organizations (RTOs) to assess an individual’s existing skills and knowledge in a practical, non-formal, or formal learning setting, to determine whether they meet the required competencies associated with the relevant Australian standards.

For instance, someone who has worked for years as a Personal Assistant (PA) in an office environment will have acquired many skills that are a part of a Business Administration qualification. Similarly, an individual who has worked in a garage may have gained relevant competencies for a Mechanics qualification. Although prior work, voluntary, and learning experiences may not be sufficient to provide a full RPL qualification, the competencies an individual has acquired can be used as credits towards the required units of competency, thus reducing the number of modules or time required to complete a qualification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? We’re here to help.

How does the RPL process work?

We’ll conduct a free skill evaluation for you. Based on your experience and qualifications, a dedicated consultant will be assigned to your case. Our consultant will guide you through the process, and once it’s been established that you’re suitable, you’ll need to gather documents to support your claims. As supporting evidence, you will compile a portfolio. This can include proof of various activities completed on the job, practical tasks to demonstrate your skills, a resume, references, your current or most recent job description etc.

The portfolio you submit will be presented as proof that you have worked in the business for a reasonable amount of time and are experienced and capable for the job.

We’ll put you in touch with one of our partner RTOs based on this proof. Your portfolio will be reviewed by an RTO assessor. If you require additional training, the RTO will offer it. After you’ve completed your training, you’ll be qualified!
